    ~There Was A Time~

My high school experience lasted from the fall of 1954 thru' the spring of 1958 ~ what remain as my favorite years of Elvis' music - his Sun Records years & his early RCA recordings ~ as well as his first movie, "Love Me Tender".

In May, 1956, I was lucky enough to see him for the first & only time in my life...the times he returned to Omaha, the tickets were impossible to get.

But there shall always be May, 1956.

And so, here's something I wrote a while back dedicated to
that time, to those friends of my youth &, of course, to Elvis:

    "THERE WAS A TIME"

There was a time when we were young and the world lay at our feet
And everything was beautiful and every grape was sweet
And our hearts did laugh so easily as we'd dance away each night
And view our world through rose-coloured glass and eyes forever bright.

    We rocked; we rolled; we chased our dreams and every shining star;
For we were young and foolish and knew we'd travel far.
In blue suede shoes, how could we lose? How could we be beat?
And everything was beautiful and every grape was sweet.

The years of youth have disappeared into shadows of the past
While time's harshness is our reality in life's magic looking glass.
Blue suede shoes have been abused, for they DID travel far...
Too bad we went those separate ways to those separate stars.

Yes, there was a time, before the rhyme,
When all the grapes were sweet.
And there was a time we did not mind
    Blue suedes upon our feet.
Yes, there was a time; Dear God, there WAS a time:
Too bad we can't repeat !!!!!

    ~Thirty Years ?~

In the beginning, there was no music...not that folk believed they were deprived of music.  Oh no, they thought  there was music.

Then there was Elvis...and they KNEW there was music...and forever after.

Has it really been 30 years since Elvis left the building?  Sometimes it seems like yesterday...but it feels like forever.

Being born in 1940, a child of the forties...growing up in the fifties...I was lucky enough to be there at the beginning...and I know exactly where I was and how I reacted on that black day when the music ended...not the American Pie man in a Chevy on a levy dreaming of Peggy Sue...no, something much greater...like being the only American King...but a prisoner of his own fame...being chased by his own demons...demons known forever only to him and to his God...a king whose realm encompassed the entire world...and a king who, having succumbed at such an early age, is like a Bob Dylan song: "Forever Young".

Thirty years?  Sometimes it seems like forever...today it feels like yesterday.

We miss you since you left the building, Elvis....
